SFB TR23
The Medical Faculty Mannheim of Heidelberg University is in charge of the DFG-funded Collaborative Research Center (CRC) TR23 (SFB-TR23) “Vascular Differentiation and Remodeling". Funded in 2005, this research consortium of the Universities of Heidelberg and Frankfurt was the first CRC in Germany with a sole focus on vascular biology research.
Funded with more than 30 Mio. € since its inception, vascular biology groups at the Mannheim campus collaborate in this CRC with their colleagues at the Medical Faculty Heidelberg, the German Cancer Research Center (DKFZ), the University of Frankfurt, as well as the Max-Planck-Institute in Bad Nauheim. The primary focus of the CRC is on the analysis of the molecular mechanisms of normal vessel growth and differentiation as well as on the study of vascular function during diseases.

The Medical Faculty Mannheim is also in charge of the DFG-funded international graduate school “Diabetic Microvascular Complications”. This graduate school is a joint enterprise with the University of Groning in the Netherlands The focus of this graduate school is on the understanding of late complications of diabetes as they occure in the vasculature. The GRK1874 is an important instrument to foster the training of the next generation of vascular biologists.

DZHK
The third major collaborative vascular research project at the Mannheim campus is the faculty’s membership in the German Center for Cardiovascular Disease. The primary focus of the Mannheim DZHK groups is on basic science and clinical problems related to cardiac arrhythmia research.
