Introductory Days for doctoral students

10–12/06/2026

In June the STMM offers another introductory event for newly registered doctoral students (especially Dr. sc. hum.). It includes basic content from the categories "Good scientific practice" and "Key competences for scientists”, as well as presentations about the research environment at the Medical Faculty Mannheim and regional resources for doctoral students.

Participation in this event can be credited with a corresponding number of credit points/hours towards the Dr. sc. hum. curriculum. Further information on the contents can be found on the event page.

Optimal preparation for this year’s Summer Symposium – Part 2: Making figures – practical guidelines

12/06/2026 – 10 a.m. to 12 a.m.

For this year’s Summer Symposium on July 16, the STMM has a number of training opportunities lined up to help young scientists make the most of the event. All events are in person and in English.

This seminar is part of the Introductory Days for new doctoral students. It demonstrates, with concrete examples, how to create clear, understandable, and attractive illustrations of scientific data for publications, presentations, and posters. Participants may submit their own figures in advance to be used as examples and receive personalized feedback.

Deadline for abstracts submission: 05/06/2026.

Science and Pizza – from and for young scientists

19/06/2026 – 16:00 hrs

The STMM members’ representatives invite you to their monthly seminar series from and for young scientists. Invited speakers or (doctoral) students themselves present their latest research, scientific literature and other science-related topics once a month.

For this last event of the semester, Lisa Wolf and Raenhha Dhami are hosting Dr. rer. nat. Christopher Jones, Lead Scientist at the CPD, Division Prevention of Cardiovascular and Metabolic Diseases.

Dr. Jones’ talk is entitled: Viral and False: Understanding Health Misinformation in the Digital Age

Participation in this event can be credited with a corresponding number of credit points/hours towards the Dr. sc. hum. and Dr. med. curricula.

Optimal preparation for this year’s Summer Symposium – Part 3: Presentation skills workshop with Simon Wolf

13/07/2026 – 9:00 a.m. – 5 a.m.

For this year’s Summer Symposium on July 16, the STMM has a number of training opportunities lined up to help young scientists make the most of the event. All events are in person and in English.

This hands‑on, full‑day workshop explores how to communicate your research clearly, confidently, and convincingly. It will focus on mastering body language, voice control, slide design, and adapting to various audiences, while gaining strategies to overcome stage fright and handle tough questions. The session combines short theory input with practical exercises and personalized feedback, including optional video analysis to fine‑tune your style.

Summer Symposium

16/07/2026 (all-day event)

This year’s STMM Summer Symposium will take place on Thursday 16/07/2026. All young researchers (Dr.med. /Dr.med.dent., Dr.sc.hum., Dr. rer. nat., Master students, postdoctoral researchers, clinician scientists) are encouraged to participate. Participants can present a poster and/or flash talk; six short talks will be selected from submitted abstracts, and you can win poster awards for best scientific poster and audience award. The aim of the Summer Symposium is to interact with fellow researchers, present and get feedback on your project, and be inspired by our invited speakers!

For this year’s edition, we are excited to be hosting Dr Matti Heino from the University of Helsinki as our Impulse Speaker and Dr Lena Kutscher, Emmy Noether Junior Group Leader at the KiTZ, as keynote lecturer. Matti is a social psychologist working on behavioral science applications to crisis resilience and collective action; Lena studies the developmental origins of pediatric brain cancer.
