STMM Introductory Events

Twice a year the STMM offers an Introductory Day for new doctoral students (in English), which includes basic information about the structured Dr.sc.hum. programme, resources and the research environment at the Medical Faculty Mannheim, and opportunities to connect with peers and advanced doctoral students. This day is recommended for Dr.sc.hum. candidates, but may also be of interest for Dr.rer.nat. candidates and Dr.med. or Dr.med.dent. candidates who are pursuing a longer, experimental project and/or are working in English.

A second day covers the basics of good scientific practice – prerequisite for all structured programmes.

Upcoming dates are published in the STMM event calendar: https://www.umm.uni-heidelberg.de/medical-faculty-mannheim/research/school-of-translational-medicine/event-calendar

The programme has a modular structure, so that doctoral students can attend all components or parts of the Introductory Days. The modules can be found in the schedule and should be booked separately in the IT platform LEARN (or via email to stmm@remove-this.medma.uni-heidelberg.de). Please note that the components should be picked according to interest in necessity, but that 5 credits for the obligatory category basics of good scientific practice (C1/K1) are also included in the Introductory Days.

Participation in this course can be accredited with a corresponding number of credit points/hours towards the mandatory curriculum of the structured Dr. sc. hum.programme, as shown in the following example overview. Doctoral students of the structured programme Dr.med. and other members of the STMM can register on the waiting list, places will be allocated after the deadline depending on availability.

Six times per year (about a month after the doctoral office deadlines), new Dr. med. or Dr. med. dent. candidates are invited to attend an in-person introductory event (in German). The event aims to equip doctoral candidates with a starter pack of information and a network of like-minded colleagues to support them on their path to the doctorate.

Topics covered:

  • Onboarding on LEARN, Q&A
  • Skills for my doctorate and for scientific research
  • Where to find training offers
  • How to assemble an individual development plan
  • How to supervise my supervisor
