Science and Pizza – from and for young scientists

The STMM members’ representatives have established a monthly seminar series from and for young scientists. Invited speakers or (doctoral) students themselves present their latest research, scientific literature and other science-related topics once a month.

To kick-start the series in the winter semester, Amritha Sathyanarayanan and Ceren Alganatay will host Prof. Michael Scherer, who leads a group focusing on Computational and Single-Cell Epigenomics at the DKFZ.  The title of his talk will be:

‘Towards dissecting single-cell epigenomic heterogeneity in Acute Myeloid Leukemia’

Participation in this event can be credited with a corresponding number of credit points/hours towards the Dr. sc. hum. and Dr. med. curricula.

Introductory Days for doctoral

22–24/10/2025

In October the STMM will offer another introductory event for newly registered doctoral students (especially Dr. sc. hum.). It includes basic content from the categories "Good scientific practice" and "Key competences for scientists”, as well as presentations about the research environment at the Medical Faculty Mannheim and regional resources for doctoral students.

Participation in this event can be credited with a corresponding number of credit points/hours towards the Dr. sc. hum. curriculum. Further information on the contents can be found on the event page.

Postdoc Appreciation Week 2025

September 15 to 19, 2025

This year, the STMM will take part in the Postdoc Appreciation Week! We are offering a series of lunchtime events on career-related topics:

Cubex One: MedTech in Mannheim

5/9/2025

On September 5, 2025 from 2 to 3.30 p.m., come and get to know the Mannheim medtech ecosystem at Cubex One, the centre for start-ups and expertise in the field of medical technology.

There will be presentations of the Cluster of medical technologies, the Life Science Accelerator Baden-Württemberg, the CUBEX medtech startup centre, the Inspire Living Lab as well as the Usability Lab.

The event is part of the Translational Medical Research (TMR) master's programme, but also doctoral students and other interested young scientists are invited to join.

Lab course: Primer to Molecular methods in clinical diagnostics

21–24/07/2025

This 4-day-course addresses molecular methods and has been diseigned especially for beginners. Participants learn about the experimental basics of modern diagnostics such as RNA extraction from clinical material, cDNA Synthesis, primer design, PCR, hybridization, Microarray production and use, Cytogenetics and CGH in lectures and practical lessons.

Prerequisites: Please bring your personal lab coat.

Full participation in the course can be credited towards the structured programmes Dr. sc. hum. (category C6) or Dr med. (category K4) programmes.

Inauguration Ceremony of the STMM

17/07/2025 – 3:00 pm

As part of this year's STMM Summer Symposium, the ceremonial inauguration of the School of Translational Medicine of the Medical Faculty Mannheim (STMM) will take place on Thursday, July 17, 2025, starting at 3:00 PM.

The STMM was initiated in 2022 and, following the introduction of structured doctoral programs (Dr.sc.hum. in 2022 and Dr. med. in spring 2025), is now firmly established. It offers education and advanced training for postgraduates and promotes the careers of young researchers through the faculty's own early career funding programs.

After welcome addresses by the Rector of the university, the Dean, and from the Ministry of Research, Science and Arts, Baden-Württemberg, young scientists from the Medical Faculty will provide brief insights into their research. The program will be accompanied by the string quartet of the UMM Orchestra and will be followed by a champagne reception.

All interested parties are cordially invited! No registration is required.

Summer Symposium

17/07/2025 (all-day event)

This year’s STMM Summer Symposium will take place on Thursday 17/07/2025. All young researchers (Dr.med. /Dr.med.dent., Dr.sc.hum., Dr. rer. nat., Master students, postdoctoral researchers, clinician scientists) are encouraged to participate. Participants can present a poster and/or flash talk; four short talks will be selected from submitted abstracts, and you can win poster awards for best scientific poster and audience award. The aim of the Summer Symposium is to interact with fellow researchers, present and get feedback on your project, and be inspired by our invited speakers!

This year’s edition will be followed in the afternoon by the Inaugural Ceremony of the STMM, showcasing research snapshots from successful young scientists from the Medical Faculty Mannheim.

The topic in June 2025 deals with circadian rhythms and molecular clocks and will be presented by Dr. Daniela Marzoll from the Biochemistry Centre Heidelberg (BZH). Her talk’s title is ‘How to stay in time: Casein Kinase, the enzymatic basis of our inner clock’

Information session on starting your doctorate (Dr med)

02/06/2025 – 5:00 – 7:00 p.m.

This event will provide an overview of the structured training program for Dr med students at the Medical Faculty Mannheim: formalities (doctoral agreement, deadlines, doctoral scholarships, etc.) and content (courses offered by the STMM, Moodle, LEARN, structured programme).

Some of our current doctoral candidates will share their experiences and insights regarding the doctorate and answer questions (e.g., how do I find a doctoral thesis and a supervisor, do I need a semester off, how can I fund my doctorate, and much more)

Introductory Days for doctoral students

04–06/06/2025

On June 4-6, 2025, the STMM will offer another introductory event for newly registered doctoral students (especially Dr. sc. hum.). It generally includes basic content from the categories "Good scientific practice" and "Key competences for scientists”, as well as presentations about the research environment at the Medical Faculty Mannheim and regional resources for doctoral students.

The programme is modular, so that doctoral students can attend all components or parts of the Introductory Days. The modules can be found in the schedule.

Participation in this event will be credited with a corresponding number of credit points/hours towards the mandatory curriculum of the structured Dr. sc. hum. programme. Doctoral students of the new structured programme Dr.med. and other members of the STMM can register on the waiting list, places will be allocated after the deadline depending on availability.

Members’ Assembly

14/05/2025 – 4:00–6:00 p.m.

This year’s STMM members’ Assembly will take place on Thursday 14/05/2025 from 4 to 6 pm. Members are all doctoral students (Dr. med. / Dr. med. dent and Dr. sc. hum.) and all Master students of the Medical Faculty Mannheim, as well as all other young scientists in structured programmes, e.g. the Clinician Scientists of the ICON and MACS programmes and postdocs in research training groups. We cordially invite all members and other interested parties to come along, join the discussion, and help shape the scientific environment they envision for themselves!

The lecture in March will deal with the topic ‘Bioinformatician and bench scientist: What can your NGS Core Facility do for your research?’, invited speaker will be Dr Carolina de la Torre from the Core Facility Platform Mannheim (CFPM).

Industry and Innovation Days 2025

The next edition of our annual Industry & Innovation Days will take place on 13 and 14 March 2025. In&Inno is dedicated to innovation, career paths in industry and elsewhere, and gives participants many networking opportunities.

Participation in this event can be counted towards the Dr. sc. hum. curriculum with a corresponding number of credit points/hours.

In February, Prof Dr Peter Bugert from the Institute of Transfusion Medicine and Immunology (ITI) will speak about ‘Second and third generation sequencing in molecular blood group diagnostics.

Introduction to R

14/02/ to 14/03/2025 (4 dates) – each from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m.

The course will take place on 4 Fridays in February and March 2025: 14 February 2025, 21 February 2025, 28 February 2025 and 14 March 2025. Participation in all 4 dates is a prerequisite for registration.

It provides an introduction to the basics of R programming, as well as units on data visualization using common plot types, performing simple statistical tests and using additional packages.

No prior programming experience is required! Please bring a laptop with R and RStudio.
Maximum participants: 20.

Industry & Innovation on Campus: CUBEX

13/2/2025 2 p.m. – 4 p.m.

The event starts at CUBEX 41 on the UMM campus. Find out more about ‘Clinical Health Technologies’ during the presentation by Dr Langejürgen from Fraunhofer IPA and visit the Hyrid OP in Cubex 41. The tour will also take you to the Inspire Living Lab, where companies and start-ups can use numerous test settings to test and further develop their digital health products. Finally, some founders will present their ideas and experiences in start-up pitches at Cubex ONE.

The event is part of the Translational Medical Research (TMR) master's programme, but also doctoral students and other interested young scientists are invited to join.

This event will provide an overview of the doctoral process at the Medical Faculty Mannheim and the planned innovations: formalities (doctoral agreement, deadlines, doctoral scholarships, etc.) and content (courses offered by the STMM, Moodle, LEARN, structured programme).

Current doctoral students will share their own experiences and adventures with doctoral theses and answer questions (e.g. How do I find a doctoral thesis and a supervisor? Do I need a semester off? How do I finance my doctoral thesis? and much more).
