MCTN | IZN Lecture: "Changing the body’s thermostat: From Brain Circuits to Clinical Target", Prof. Natalia Machado, Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (BIDMC) & Harvard Medical School, Boston, USA
Location: UMM, House 6, Level 4, Lecture Hall 1
Language: English
Speaker Bio: Natalia Machado
Natalia Machado is a neuroscientist and Assistant Professor of Neurology at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (BIDMC) and Harvard Medical School. Her research investigates how the brain regulates body temperature, metabolism, and physiological responses to stress, with a particular focus on the mechanisms underlying fever and competing metabolic demands.
Her work also explores how modulating body temperature and metabolism can protect the brain and other vital organs from ischemic injury. Her laboratory is developing innovative approaches to therapeutic hypothermia, with the goal of reducing tissue damage after stroke and cardiac arrest and exploring its potential applications in other diseases.
Natalia Machado’s research has advanced the understanding of the interactions between the brain, metabolism, and systemic physiology, with promising implications for patients affected by stroke, inflammatory conditions, and metabolic disorders.

MCTN – MI3 | IZN Lecture: "Targeting B cells in multiple sclerosis: lessons from anti-CD20 trials and the EBV connection", Prof. Øivind Torkildsen, Faculty of Medicine, Department of Clinical Medicine, University of Bergen, Norway
Location: UMM, House 42, Lecture Hall 7
Language: English
Speaker Bio: Øivind Torkildsen
Øivind Torkildsen is a neurologist and Professor of Neurology at the University of Bergen, Norway, and a senior consultant at Haukeland University Hospital. He leads the Bergen Multiple Sclerosis Research Group and coordinates the EU-funded EBV-MS project, which investigates the role of Epstein–Barr virus (EBV) in the development and progression of multiple sclerosis (MS).
His research focuses on understanding the underlying mechanisms of MS and identifying new therapeutic strategies. With extensive experience in both clinical and preclinical research, Øivind Torkildsen has led numerous clinical trials investigating innovative treatment approaches for MS. His work aims to advance our understanding of the link between EBV infection and MS and to pave the way for new strategies for treatment and disease prevention.
