Dear visitor, welcome to the Mannheim Institute for Intelligent Systems in Medicine!
The MIISM is dedicated to the research, development and application of innovative, intelligent technologies for the healthcare sector. Our aim is to use our solutions to improve the quality of patient care and make it more efficient. To this end, we work in an interdisciplinary manner at the MIISM and in collaboration with our clinical partners in Mannheim. Furthermore, we cooperate closely with stakeholders from research, practice and industry, both in Germany and abroad. Through our work, we are contributing to a modern healthcare system that is equipped to meet current and future challenges.
Embedded in an innovation and transfer environment
The MIISM is located in an outstanding innovation and transfer environment inside the University Medical Centre Mannheim, in close neighborhood of the Mannheim Medical Technology Cluster, and within the Health + Life Science Alliance Heidelberg Mannheim. This location enables a smoother transfer of research into practical applications.
The location inside the University Medical Centre Mannheim provides access to latest medical devices for diagnostics and therapeutics such as cutting-edge magnetic resonance imaging and radiotherapy systems and enables patient-oriented research with a focus on its future clinical application.
Furthermore, the city of Mannheim has established the Mannheim Medical Technology Cluster as part of the 2011 Economic and Structural Development Plan. The cluster comprises over 200 companies ranging from micro enterprises to global corporations and from start-ups to companies dating back over 100 years, plus clinics and research facilities. This environment represents a vibrant innovation and transfer ecosystem for medical technology.
In addition, there is the opportunity to carry out research projects with regional partners inside the Health + Life Science Alliance Heidelberg Mannheim, the hub of medicine and life sciences in Germany, such as the Central Institute of Mental Health, the German Cancer Research Center, the European Molecular Biology Laboratory, the University Hospital Heidelberg, and the Max Planck Institute for Medical Research.
Research and development at MIISM ranges from information systems in medical technology via the automation of medical workflows to the translation of our research findings into clinical applications. The MIISM staff is active in these areas and also collaborates on clinical translation with other units of Heidelberg University Hospital.
The MIISM provides a Master’s degree programme in Biomedical Engineering at the Medical Faculty in Mannheim, which is part of Heidelberg University. In addition, students have the opportunity to carry out their Bachelor’s or Master’s theses or doctoral dissertations at our institute.
