Tobias Banaschewski and Michael Platten among the most cited scientists 2025

Date: 17.11.2025

Each year, the U.S. company Clarivate analyzes its Web of Science database to identify the “Highly Cited Researchers.” This database covers scientific publications across a broad range of disciplines. Citations are an important indicator of the significance and quality of scientific work; frequent citation means international visibility. Being listed among the world’s most highly cited researchers signals substantial influence and recognition within the scientific community.

Researchers are included if their publications rank in the top one percent of citations globally in their field, or if they demonstrate outstanding performance across multiple disciplines (the Cross-Field category). Tobias Banaschewski and Michael Platten are listed in the "Cross-Field" category.

Tobias Banaschewski is the deputy director of the Central Institute of Mental Health (CIMH) and the medical director of the Department of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry and Psychotherapy. He also holds the corresponding professorship at the Medical Faculty Mannheim. He was already recognized as a Highly Cited Researcher last year. Tobias Banaschewski investigates the developmental trajectories of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and associated psychiatric conditions in children and adolescents, as well as their causes, neurobiological mechanisms, and the development of individualized treatment approaches. He contributes to the development of evidence-based clinical guidelines. He addresses these topics through close interdisciplinary collaboration within national and international research networks.

Michael Platten is the director of the Department of Neurology at the University Medical Center Mannheim, as well as the spokesperson for the Mannheim Comprehensive Neuroscience Campus at the Mannheim Medical Faculty. He also heads the Clinical Cooperation Unit for Neuroimmunology and Brain Tumor Immunology at the German Cancer Research Center. In addition, he currently serves as president of the European Association of Neuro-Oncology. Since 2019, Michael Platten has appeared on the Highly Cited Researchers list five times. He develops targeted cellular immunotherapies against gliomas, one of the deadliest forms of brain tumors. Using advanced bioinformatic and molecular biological tools, he and his team have developed vaccines that mobilize the body’s immune system to precisely attack altered proteins that drive tumor growth. These immunotherapies may also be applied to other types of cancer in the future.
