Prof. Dr. Wängler studied chemistry and mathematics at the Johannes Gutenberg University in Mainz. His state examination work dealt with the synthesis and evaluation of new PET radiopharmaceuticals for the determination of MGMT status in tumors in vivo. In his subsequent doctoral thesis, he researched new methods for the early detection of diabetes mellitus. His doctoral thesis (2002-2004) entitled "Synthesis, 11C- and 18F-labelling and evaluation of repaglinide derivatives for the quantification of pancreatic ß-cell mass in vivo using PET" was honored the Award of the International Isotope Society - Central European Division. After a one-year postdoctoral phase at the German Cancer Research Center (DKFZ) in the Department of Medical Physics in Radiology in the junior group of Prof. Dr. Fabian Kiessling, he moved to the DKFZ Radiopharmaceutical Chemistry in Heidelberg as group leader. From 2006-2011 he was head of research at the Nuclear Medicine Clinic of the Ludwig-Maximilians-University in Munich, where he habilitated in 12/2010 and received the venia legendi in 02/2011. In 2010, he was appointed a W3-Professorship for "Molecular Imaging with a Focus on Radiochemistry" at the Ruprecht-Karls-University Heidelberg. In 2011, he was appointed a W2-Professorship for "Experimental Nuclear Medicine with a Focus on Radiopharmaceutical Chemistry" at the Ludwig-Maximilians-University Heidelberg and W2-Professorship for "Experimental Nuclear Medicine with a Focus on Radiopharmaceutical Chemistry" at the Ludwig-Maximilians-University Munich.
He accepted the appointment at the Mannheim Medical Faculty of the University of Heidelberg in 2011 for the winter semester 2011/2012.
