LUCIA EU Project General Meeting in Mannheim, Germany

  • The event was hosted by the University of Heidelberg and the German Cancer Research Center in Mannheim. It gathered the 20 internal partners of the project to discuss the advancements of the project in this second year.

  • The focus of the LUCIA Project is to better understand the risk factors of lung cancer, with a long-term goal to help the development of screening techniques and/or programmes for the early detection of lung cancer. The LUCIA project is funded by the European Research and Innovation programme Horizon Europe in the framework of the EU Cancer Mission.

  • Taking place on 6 and 7 May 2024, this third in-person meeting of the project has been an important milestone to discuss the technical and clinical advancements of the project, creating an excellent opportunity to foresee the following tasks in the project.

Started in January 2023, the LUCIA EU project aims to establish a toolbox to discover and understand new risk factors contributing to the development of lung cancer. In order to ensure effective collaboration between all partners, the consortium is meeting twice a year in-person in addition to regular online meetings.

The last meeting of the project took place on 6 and 7 May, in Mannheim, Germany, at the invitation of LUCIA’s partners, the University of Heidelberg and the German Cancer Research Center (DFKZ). This meeting was an opportunity to discuss the advancements of the project with the perspective of the project first reporting during summer 2024.

The first day of the meeting all partners presented their main tasks and achievements since January 2023. The main discussions happened on the technical and clinical aspects of the project, with updates on the phases of the different LUCIA technologies and on the recruitment of patients.

The second day started with an internal social lab workshop organised by YAGHMA, focusing on the potential barriers to the real-life implementation of the LUCIA technologies to lung cancer screening. This special workshop was a preparation for the Social Lab Workshop with external participants taking place on 5 June 2024.

The last part of the two days focused on an open discussion on possible risks and barriers in each work package, and a first overview of the administrative preparation of the upcoming periodic report.

Until 2027, the LUCIA project will continue its work to contribute to the EU Cancer Mission together with other projects and researchers across Europe funded by Horizon Europe aiming at understanding and preventing different types of cancer. The consortium will meet again in the second half of 2024 for a new in-person meeting.
